An Elegant Fall Wedding at The Essence Event Center in St. Paul A Real Wedding at The Essence Event Center in St. Paul, Minnesota The Essence Event Center in St. Paul, Minnesota in October. Two hundred of their favorite people and an unseasonably warm fall day that made the whole thing feel alive. Gabby and Khang are the kind of couple that make a photographer's job feel easy. Laid back, genuinely funny, completely themselves, and also two people who clearly put a lot of thought and care into every detail of their day. The result was a wedding that felt both polished and personal, elegant without being fussy, and full of real moments that I will not forget anytime soon. The Venue: The Essence Event Center, St. Paul MN The Essence Event Center in St. Paul is one of those venues that does a lot of the visual work for you. Exposed brick walls, soaring open ceilings, black steel windows, concrete floors. It has a raw, industrial backbone that feels warm and intimate when it is filled with the right people and the right details. Gabby and Khang leaned fully into that. Their color palette of rust, copper, terracotta, and deep red was made for this space. The brick picked up every warm tone. The florals from Cosmos Floral brought in deep burgundy dahlias alongside blush, cream, and terracotta blooms that felt like they belonged in the space. The cocktail napkins with their dog on them were the kind of personal touch that makes guests smile. The whole aesthetic landed exactly where they wanted it: casual elegant. Nothing overdone. Everything intentional. The Details That Made It Theirs I always say you can tell a lot about a couple by their details, and Gabby and Khang did not disappoint. Khang chose a deep burgundy velvet blazer with a black bow tie and sleek black loafers. Thoughtful, considered, stylish without trying too hard. Gabby was in a sleek, backless halter gown with button detail down the back. Clean, modern, and absolutely stunning against the brick and steel of The Essence. Together they looked like they had been styled for a magazine spread. Portraits at Como Zoo and a Moment 30 Years in the Making Even though it was October, the day was genuinely warm and sunny, which meant we had beautiful light for portraits outside of The Essence and over at Como Zoo. Como is such a beautiful location for couples portraits, and getting to use it on a wedding day felt like a little bonus. But the moment I will remember most from our time at Como had nothing to do with light or composition. It had everything to do with a photo that Gabby had held onto, a photo of her parents on their own wedding day, leaning against a tree, wrapped up in each other. Her mom in a big, beautiful 80s gown. Her dad in a white suit. The kind of photo that lives on a shelf for decades and becomes part of a family's story. We found our tree. We recreated it. And I will leave it at that, because some moments do not need a lot of words. The Ceremony: A Room Full of People Who Really Love Them The ceremony began at 4:30pm with a friend of the couple officiating, which always adds something special to the words being spoken. When you listen to the person who really knows you standing up there and meaning every word, it lands differently. And then they kissed. I have photographed a lot of weddings. A lot of ceremony kiss moments. But the sound that erupted in that room when Gabby and Khang were announced as husband and wife stopped me for just a second. It was loud and immediate and completely genuine. Two hundred people who were really, truly happy for these two. You could feel it. The speeches that followed later that night were emotional across the board. Her sisters, both sets of parents, the best man. Every single one of them. You can tell when a couple has love around them, and Gabby and Khang absolutely do. One of My Favorite Days of 2025 Watching two people who are so clearly right for each other celebrating their love with everyone they love is the part of this job that never gets old. The Essence Event Center, the warm October light, the room full of people cheering, and dancing the night away. What a day.
